Boston– The Red Sox could use upgrades at shortstop and catcher respectively, as well as some answers in the rotation if they don’t get healthier. If Jed Lowrie comes back from injury, then shortstop probably is not a huge need. They could use a catcher, even a defensive-minded one at this point, because it seems like everyone and their brother can run on the Red Sox. J.D. Drew hasn’t been ripping the cover off the ball, but he is still somewhat productive.
Possible Scenarios– The Red Sox could go a number of different ways with this one. They could look into a trade for a rental infielder a la Jamey Carroll or Clint Barmes if Jed Lowrie has trouble coming back. Or they could trade for a backup catcher and start him like a Jose Molina/Koyie Hill type. Aaron Harang, Brandon McCarthy, Rich Harden or Jeff Francis could be targets for their rotation. If J.D. Drew continues at the rate he is hitting they could also try platooning him with Darnell McDonald once Carl Crawford comes back. One of Oakland’s outfielders (Josh Willingham, Coco Crisp, or David DeJesus) could also be a fit to spell Drew.
