Ubaldo Jimenez’s Potential Landing Spots

Ubaldo Jimenez doesn’t have a stat line that will blow you away, with a 6-9 record with a 4.20 ERA in 20 starts. But some of that has to be attributed to the fact that he pitches half of his games at Coors Field, which is one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the league. Jimenez, though, has held batters to a .249 clip this year and .230 over his career. It makes it look even better when half of his starts take place at Coors.
 Potential Landing Spots-
Detroit– The Tigers have moved Phil Coke back to the bullpen, which is good in the fact that they might not need to trade for a bullpen arm, but the move creates a hole in the rotation. The Tigers have used some of their young prospects in Andy Oliver and Charlie Furbush in spot starts and are now using Duane Below in the rotation. Jimenez paired with Justin Verlander would be very intriguing.
• Cincinnati– The Reds currently sit three games back of first place in the NL Central (as of the morning of 7/25/11) and one game below .500. The Reds need some help in the pitching department seeing as they rank 13th in the NL in ERA and have the fifth highest WHIP (Walks and Hits per inning) in the NL. What’s more, Edison Volquez, who provided the Reds with 17 wins in 2008, has been up and down with the Reds and their AAA ball club the Louisville Bats.
• New York– The Yankees generally always make some kind of move at the deadline and seeing them acquire Jimenez wouldn’t be surprising. New York has had some issues with their starting pitching. Phil Hughes just got back from a DL stint cause by arm fatigue and shoulder problems. Jimenez could give the Bronx Bombers some insurance there.
• Texas– This probably seems a bit unlikely as the Rangers have won 12 in a row, and because of that might feel they don’t need a “big-time ace shot-in-the-arm” acquisition a la Cliff Lee last season. But think about it, yes the Rangers have good pitching, but they need a big-time ace. Jimenez can give them that. The Rangers also need bullpen help. Acquiring Jimenez would allow them to move Alexi Ogando back to the bullpen to solidify the bridge to Neftali Feliz.
